STORY BEHIND MASTERPIECE

Writer's picture: Sharon GiftySharon Gifty

I was having a conversation with an old friend. She played piano and didn’t think she was good enough at it. In fact, she didn’t think she was good enough at anything. She said something about feeling like she was almost good at something but not quite.

That last comment inspired this song. In Ephesians 2:10 the NLT version says ‘For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.’

We are God’s masterpiece. Other translations say we are His handiwork. How amazing is that! When I think of a masterpiece I think of amazing beautiful artwork, sculptures and landscapes. We are described as masterpieces too!

The verse prior to this one says in Ephesians 2:9 says ‘Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.’ So we shouldn’t boast that we are saved because of our works, because of how ‘good’ we are. In the same way, we shouldn’t beat ourselves up because of a lack of works or feeling not good enough. God has created us and created us anew. We rely on Him to be the masterpieces He has created us to be and do all that He has purposed for us to do.

There’s another scripture that talks about the potter and the clay in Isaiah 45:9b: Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying “stop, you’re doing it wrong!”

So who I am I to say I’m not good enough, if the One who created me says I am?

You are a masterpiece. You are good enough. God has steps for you to take that no one else can. Believe His truth above anyone else’s lies.

Hope you are encouraged by the song.

Stay Blessed x
